Measuring Event Impact Beyond Headcount

Practical indicators that make the case for running it again next year.

Headcount alone is a weak measure: it captures reach, not impact. The indicators we've found most persuasive with senior management are: actual-to-registered attendance ratio, average dwell time on site, the number of meetings or contacts generated, and the share of attendees who say they'd return.

Add one that can't be measured on the day: commercial opportunities closed within ninety days that name the event as their first touchpoint. That single metric is what moves an event, in management's eyes, from a cost line to a business channel.

Put those numbers in a two-page report — no longer — and deliver it within two weeks of closing, not two months later when the decision has already been made.
